The AI Receptionist Wave Is Already Here

Where Adoption Sits

Currently, 20% of service businesses have adopted an AI receptionist, by the end of 2028, that number is projected to be over 50% according to the US Census Bureau. Our read of the market is that somewhere between one in ten and one in four service businesses use an AI receptionist today. We expect that to reach roughly a third by the end of this year and well past half by 2028.

The technology got good enough, fast enough, and cheap enough at the same time. What changed? Three things. Voice models now sound human, and the response time on a call dropped below half a second, which is the threshold where a caller stops noticing they are talking to software. Second, the cost of running those calls collapsed. Third, and most important, the packaging caught up.

You no longer need to build your own agent to have one. The businesses that win this wave will not be the ones with the fanciest setup. They will be the ones who moved early, captured the jobs their competitors let ring, and used the data from those calls to get sharper every month. The ones who wait will be buying the same product eighteen months from now, having paid for it several times over in missed work.
